Start of the Ultra Trail E101
04:00
The spine-tingling moment that 600 trail runners from 70 nations have all been training and preparing months and years for. Why not join us in giving them the best heroes send-off we can as they set off into the dawn on their long journey. 07:15 & 07:45 - E51 Start, 09:00 - E16 Start.
First, 2168m, offers a captivating view of the UNESCO World Heritage Site
06:15 – 10:30 E101 & E51 passing
The Cliff Walk and sun terrace at Berghaus First are perfect viewing points from where to watch and cheer on the 1500 trail runners as they pass through the area around First and through the race post beneath the lower Oberjoch chairlift station. The E101 athletes must pass through twice as they follow a loop in the route. An Alphorn player and announcer greet the competitors and offer a little motivation for the path ahead whilst spectators are invited into the restaurant for coffee or brunch.
Männlichen, 2229m, a breath-taking panorama and sweeping view to Wengen below
09:10 – 21:30 - E35 & E101 passing
The ascent from Wengen to Männlichen is notoriously steep and seemingly unrelenting. From the viewpoint at Männlichen almost the entire route of the E101 is visible, and the athletes appear like ants far below. Our announcer and folklore entertainment welcome competitors as they reach the ridge top, and send them on their way toward the beckoning Eiger North Face. The restaurant entices all comers to linger a while and enjoy a delicious evening dinner.
Kleine Scheidegg, 2061m, at the foot of the Jungfrau Massif
09:25 - 23:45 - E35 & E101 passing
The full impact of the wow-factor that the triple peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau delivers is best experienced from here. Kleine Scheidegg first became a public attraction during the first ascents of the Eiger north face by famous mountaineers of the day. Today, 1200 trail runners competing in the E101 and E35 races will pass through here, all heading to the foot of the Eiger North Face and on to Grindelwald. Cosy mountain inns along the way have long provided substantial refreshment to all comers.
Event arena, folk festival at the race finish
14:30 – 18:30 – arrival of E101 race winners and first finishers
The event arena becomes a festival site as the winners and first finishers cross the finish line and are greeted by deafening applause and a real party atmosphere. From approx. 14:30 we expect our first Men’s category finisher and from 17:30 our Women’s, who’ll then be crowned Mister & Miss Eiger Ultra Trail. First finishers of the E51 and E35 are expected between 11:45 and 14:00. At the event arena, there will also be more than fifteen exhibitors presenting their products, with refreshments and food outlets scattered around for good measure. In the evening the Mountain prize award ceremony takes place and a concert leads revellers into the night.
Highly recommended and not to be missed is a visit to the refreshment area in Burglauenen. Shortly after 07:30 in the morning, the starting gun for the E35 race is sounded here, and a little later for E51 competitors, Burglauenen marks the beginning of the last leg to the finish line. Mentally perhaps, E101 athletes will have reached their halfway point here, but will be only too aware of what awaits them on the path out of Burglauenen towards Wengen and the demanding ascent to Männlichen ahead. An incentive or simply awelcome distraction can play an integral role here in the overall success of the individual’s race. With this in mind, folklore performances, an announcer and further festivities are provided to lighten the atmosphere. Burglauenen is best reached by the BOB train as parking is not available.
